Why no residential codes on gutter installation in Washington and Oregon is a huge problem for home owners.
Since there are no residential codes for gutter installations, new gutter installations do not have to meet or pass any type of inspection unlike your roof or other important aspects of your home. Unfortunately this creates a big problem in the gutter industry.
Since gutter installations do not have to pass inspection, a lot of gutter installers can just hang up your gutters as fast as they can, give you a one year warranty and proceed to do the same again and again. All while they continue to do so, years go by and you start to experience water damage from the poor installation you purchased. You’ve probably heard this before “cheap things are not good, and good things do not come cheap.” The lowest quote for an installation you get the more likely the company who offered that quote is working based off production, meaning quality goes down to get more installations done to make their revenue or worse are not licensed do not know what they are doing and “offer” what they call in the industry as a (taillight warranty) meaning you’re warranty last as long as you can see their taillight.

Since gutter installations do not have to pass inspection, quality of a good installation is also a consistent problem in the gutter industry. Gutter companies come a dime a dozen, new ones open up almost every other week and the new ones and old ones all have the same issue. They all lack carpentry skills which is crucial when working on someone’s home. Gutter companies today are either taught how to install gutters from their previous employers or from their family from whom they’ve inherited the company from. To this day companies still continue the same practice that any real carpenter will see and know why it isn’t ok. Other then not cleaning your gutters regularly this is the number one issue why your gutters are causing water damage to your home and consist of having to replace your gutters every 20 years or less depending on the severity of the installation or the materials they used.
It is hard to believe that there are no residential codes on one of most important things that protect your home from water damage in the northwest where it rains constantly.
The lack of residential codes and carpentry skills are the reason why when hiring a gutter company you’re unfortunately rolling the dice on a good gutter installation. Whether you go with the cheapest quote you get or the highest. More than likely the results will always be less than satisfactory when going with the cheapest option but regardless you may encounter the same issue with the highest quote. This is why to this day even if you clean you’re gutters, you still see water damage, your gutters rusting through or honestly your gutters separating from your home, eventually to them falling off and sometimes taking the fascia board with it. Maybe you’ve seen this in your Neighborhood or unfortunately experienced this first hand but as of today these are issues that are very common and problematic.

New home construction is another story. It’s already bad enough that people with a lot of money get greedy start an LLC, (limited liability company) have it run for a year, not pay their subcontractors to build new homes that are going to have problems because they hire the cheapest quotes they can get to get the job done just for them to not pay the subcontractors, flips the new homes, pocket the money and close down the business with no repercussions. These companies are known as (burner companies). It’s a shame but unfortunately it’s the world we live in. This is a huge problem on its own but to be more specific and bring it back to GUTTERS, gutter installation is just generally a big problem in new construction because the lack of codes and inspections. Because the lack of codes and inspections, gutters are the last thing general contractors and architects care about. Architects see gutters on a home more of a cosmetic thing than their functionality. Yes they know they have to be on the home to serve a purpose but there are just some designs that are set up for failure when it comes to gutter installations. As for the general contractors it is absolutely the last thing they care about. Most general contractors are trying to save penny’s on the dollar for new construction to turn a profit. Since the gutters do not have to pass inspection and it is very competitive in the gutter industry due to the number of companies around, the general contractor will always pick the cheapest quote they can get, leading to future problems.

Until they update residential codes on gutter installation, these are the problems in the gutter industry today.
I, Victor Valencia, the owner of Vic’s gutter filters am a journeyman carpenter who graduated from the Northwest college of construction in Portland, Oregon. I spent most of my construction career as a bridge builder and when things got slow I answered a Craigslist ad making false promises from our major competitor Leaf Filter. Regardless of my background they “hired” me immediately, or so I thought. They actually make false promises, fishing in people to work as a subcontractor for them on Craigslist. You’ll see their post on Craigslist to this day. They hired me as a subcontractor through another subcontractor. They charge the homeowner $10,000, let the salesman walk away with $3,000 and the installer walk off with $200 and this is only for their filters (no gutters). They see the installer’s as just spendable labor. So badly it doesn’t matter to them if the new labor is licensed or not. It’s a shame and it’s an embarrassment that I ever worked with them but I did learn some things. I loved the idea “leaf filter” never clean your gutters again! But their product doesn’t work, it’s cheap plastic and they take advantage of their customers and laborers. I’ve witnessed this first hand but don’t take my word on it? There’s a reason why both leaf filter and leaf guard both have a 2 star rating on every office they own in the country on both yelp and the better business bureau including an F rating with numerous lawsuits. I thought to my self there has to be something else. Something that actually works and doesn’t cost more than your car! After experimenting with multiple products I found out what worked and what didn’t for a gutter guard.
After establishing Vic’s gutter filters as a gutter filter installation company I knew I eventually I would have to include gutter installation as well. I was blessed to start it off with such an amazing crew. Prior to us installing, I did not have any experience with gutter installation. 4 years of carpentry school and gutter installation was very basic to the point where you couldn’t even find anything about gutters in any of my books! There’s no residential codes on it so why teach about it. The crew I started off with were more than great, I was extremely lucky to have met them. I took what I learned from them and what I learned from my trade school and with that we figured out what gutter companies with 30 years experience couldn’t! The materials we use and how we install them is how we stand by our lifetime guarantee on workmanship, minimum 20 year warranty on our gutters, and lifetime if installed with our gutter filters. Compare that to the industry average of a 1-3 year warranty or worse the taillight warranty!

Just because you received a bad installation doesn’t mean you have to replace your gutters!
Do not let anyone tell you that you need new gutters without a true inspection. Unless someone actually goes up on your roof and inspects your roof and takes pictures do not believe them. So many companies will tell you anything just to make a sale.
How We Saved A Customer Thousands!
Let me tell you a little story about a past customer involving everything I’ve talked about. I get a message from a customer asking for a quote for a new gutter replacement, I say to them let me inspect your gutters, the inspection and quote are free and to not let anyone tell them they need to be replaced without a proper inspection. I show up and I am their fourth quote. The other three did not inspect their gutters just tried to sell them new gutters. What happened was that both of their gutters from the front and back were starting to separate from the home with the gutter in the front actually falling off but being saved from their pergola. What caused the gutters to separate were three things. Yes, the homeowner did not clean their gutters in years which will cause the wood that it’s attached to rot, they were actually missing a vital part to their roof called a drip edge which prevents water from going behind the gutter and what would also cause the same wood to rot without it and a sloppy gutter installation. If they would have had one of the other companies install new gutters on their home, unfortunately the results would have been the same and the gutters would have fell again. The drip edge is roofing material not gutter and most gutter companies would just put the blame on the previous worker. But since we have carpentry experience and we are precise with our inspections we were able to clean, repair and install our gutter filters! After we cleaned their gutters?? Surprise! They looked brand new! We repaired, improved their home, saved them money, and helped them from future problems!
